OCA Extravaganza 2015

Posted by

Triton Freshwater Aquatics was represented at the OCA Extravaganza this year. It was my first convention and let me tell you, it won't be my last.

I had the privilege of meeting many people in the hobby and getting to talk to everyone about there experiences. Not only did I learn a ton, I also made many new friends.

We were set up in room 350 of the hotel, the experience was something I had never seen before, everyone left their hotel room doors open and people just walked around seeing what everyone had. I saw a room with close to 20 aquariums in it. I was able to grab some Altolamprologus Compressiceps 'Gold Head' and some Venezuela Cories over the weekend.

I entered my Altolamprologus Calvus White Chaitika into the competition. He placed 2nd in his class, and I learned many new tips on showing fish. Most importantly, remove the fish from the main tank about a month ahead of time, get them used to being alone with no caves. Don't use too large of tank to show a smaller fish, a big tank makes the fish look small, and never use a net on a show fish, while this didn't affect me, I was told the risk of damaging a fin is too high with a net.

The Best in Show at the competition was a Cichlasoma Umbriferum, this fish was about 18" long and stunning!

If you have never been to a convention, I highly recommend trying one out, it is a lot of fun spending an entire weekend with so many like minded people. I can't wait for the next one!
